Lauren & Laura – Pay Services

My name is Lauren, I am 20 years old and I currently work in Pay Services at Kings Mill Hospital.

I am working as a payroll apprentice undertaking a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship.

I chose to apply for an apprenticeship as I felt university wasn’t the best route for me after completing my A-Levels. Personally, I feel that I am a practical learner, so doing another 3 years of study wouldn’t suit me. However, by doing an apprenticeship it allows you to start training in real work environments, gain experience and skills which can then lead to a career and then potentially a full-time job. Additionally, it allows you to learn new skills that are valuable in real life situations as well as earning some money.

My experience as an apprentice has been enjoyable, interesting and supportive. This is because in my team I feel supported and valued by all members. I have enjoyed learning on the job and I learn something new every day. I have gained new skills when dealing with different types of people and I have gained confidence when answering phone calls. Although there have been challenges, the team are very supportive and help me when I am unsure.

I still have until November to complete my apprenticeship and during this time so far, I have learnt how to cope in challenging situations. I also had the opportunity to visit different departments which I found interesting and useful to help broaden my choices when coming to the end of my apprenticeship.

If you are unsure whether to carry on at school or unsure about university, then I can highly recommend an apprenticeship, as after your apprenticeship has finished you could then go to university to complete further studies on your chosen subject.
